Doraville Celebrates Autism Awareness Day

On Sunday, April 14th, the City of Doraville with the City of Chamblee and the City of Brookhaven, joined forces to host an Autism Awareness Event to provide support and resources to individuals and families touched by autism.

To kick off the event, participants gathered at Brookhaven Police Department to engage in a heartwarming caravan drive down Buford Highway to Honeysuckle Park. The caravan, which included participation from Brookhaven and Doraville Police, symbolized solidarity and unity among the participating communities. The caravan was greeted along their drive by supporters who waved and cheered them on as they drove by.

At Honeysuckle Park, attendees were greeted with a vibrant and joyous atmosphere! There were activities and resources tailored to the autism community. Nonprofit organizations dedicated to autism advocacy set up informative booths, providing valuable information and guidance to families and individuals seeking support. There was a bubble artist onsite creating bubbles of every size for kids to chase and marvel at.

One of the highlights of the event was the performances from Warriors Forever and Survive Taekwondo Fitness. These organizations offer programs specifically for individuals with autism. These inclusive programs not only promote physical activity and social interaction but also foster a sense of belonging and empowerment among participants. Throughout the morning, attendees had the opportunity to engage in various activities, like sack races, ring tosses, and remote car racing. There were also sensory-friendly activities and bracelet-making with DART. 

Doraville's inaugural Autism Awareness Event was a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of all the teams and organizations involved. By coming together to celebrate and support individuals with autism, the community has taken a significant step toward a more inclusive community. We're looking forward to continuing this event for many years to come!
