 One of the most recognized authentic handmade Shanghai Soup Dumpling and traditional Pork Bun restaurants in Georgia is here in Doraville, on Buford Highway: Northern China Restaurant. Its food has been featured in accredited food magazines like Bon Appetit, in Atlanta Magazine (2023, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2009) and in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (2022), among others. It also has been highly recommended by many social media food influencers, bloggers, and celebrities, including Anthony Bourdain, on an episode about Atlanta of “the Layover”, a travel and food TV series in 2013.

 The Northern China Eatery owners Ms. Jenny Qi and her son Frank Zhang are originally from Tianjin, an important coastal municipality on the eastern border of Beijing in Northern China. They shared with us that all the dishes on their extensive menu are made from scratch, using fresh products from the Buford Farmers’ Market and other local markets, and based on family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation; these delicious dishes bring people to Doraville from all over to enjoy the freshness of their food. Every day the head chef and assistants prepare between one and two thousand dumplings and buns. These are so popular that sometimes during the holidays, they even run out of them.

 Other dishes include handmade noodles (glass and flat rice), Chinese pancakes, grain crepes, and baked Chinese biscuits. “All dishes made with their handmade dough are labor-intensive and require the development of specific skills and hand muscle training to reach the perfect dough texture and thickness of the wraps and noodles.”, said Frank Zhang.  

 Dumplings can be steamed, or broiled, and the buns can be steamed or pan-fried. The Shanghai Soup Dumplings are made with a delicious tender pork filling along with a thick and juicy pork broth, wrapped in a see-through, wheat-based dough. The best way to enjoy this dish is by using a Chinese soup spoon, adding a drop of chili oil and black vinegar, letting it to cool for a minute, and then eating it in one bit. Humm! Don't miss them!

Los “Shanghai Soup Dumplings” están hechas con un delicioso relleno de carne de cerdo suave junto con un caldo espeso cerdo, y son envueltos en una masa muy fina casi traslucida de harina de trigo. La mejor manera de disfrutar este platillo es utilizando una cuchara sopera china, agregando un toque de aceite de chile y de vinagre negro, dejando que el jugoso relleno se enfríe por un minuto, comiéndolos de un solo bocado y que rico. ¡No dejes de probarlos!
