Open Records Requests

Records Policy

The Georgia Open Records Act (OCGA 50-18-70 through 77) establishes the right of every citizen to inspect and receive a copy of all public records, except those specifically exempt from being open. When the City receives a record request under the Open Records Act, it must comply with the guidelines established in the law:
 
The City of Doraville shall determine if the requested records are subject to access and are public documents as defined by the Georgia Open Records Act. The City shall have a reasonable amount of time to determine whether or not the requested document(s) is a public record(s), but in no event shall this time exceed three (3) business days. If the public documents are not immediately available, the City must provide a written description of the records and a timetable for their production.


The City of Doraville follows the retention schedules provided by the Georgia Department of Archives and History.

Fees 

Fulfilling public records requests to the extent permitted by Georgia Law may incur copying and/or administrative costs. Such costs may include copying charges of $.10 per page and/or administrative charges for search, retrieval, and other direct administrative costs.

 Administrative charges will not exceed the salary of the lowest-paid full-time employee who, at the discretion of the custodian of the records, has the necessary skill and training to perform the request. (The first 15 minutes are free)

Open Records Requests
How do I submit an Open Records Request?
Police Department by phone (770) 455-1000, in person with the Records Coordinator (3750 Park Ave. Doraville, Georgia) or by submitting the online Public Records Request Police’s form; or

All other departments by phone (770) 451-8745, in person at the City Clerk’s Office (3725 Park Ave. Doraville, Georgia) or by submitting the online Public Records Request all other departments form.   

Publicly employed law enforcement officer requesting records as part of law enforcement investigation can submit your request online here.

What type of records are exempt under the Open Records Act?
The following are examples of records that are exempt from disclosure under the Open Records Act:
 
1. Any record required by the federal government to be kept confidential.
2. Medical or veterinary records or similar files, the disclosure of which would be an invasion of personal privacy.
3. Certain records pertaining to law enforcement and prosecutions.
4. Accident reports, except upon the submission of a written statement of need by requesting party.
